Egidius Dörfler, Bass bows
We now offer both German and French style model bass bows, by Egidius Dörfler The Dörfler
family is in it's 4th generation tradition of fine, master bow making. While
they make and provide bows for several levels and price ranges, we
only offer their highest level bow, "Egidius" with the 3 stars on
the stamp (Ours actually have 4 stars). The family now keeps the tradition alive by only
stamping the hard special 'select' pernambuco sticks, with the hand crafted
ebony frogs, after their grandfather, Egidius.
Why we don't sell the regular class Dorfler brand German or
French bows. Because we also sell deluxe pernambuco hand
made bows, (made in China) we feel that the quality or workmanship
and playability are far superior in the same price ranges so at this
time, we don't see the need to offer their 'shop' bows. The
wood quality of our String Emporium (no name) pernambuco is
especially great wood and only found on the very best
professional bass bows.
We have 4 interesting models of *Egidius*** Dörfler French Bass
bows:
1) The French, 'Tourte' model is the shortest (and Steve's
favorite!) While it is not considered too short, (it is a very
normal length), it is a nice, strong stick. Very powerful
throughout (A great spicatto bow!) Octagonally shaped, a solid sterling silver adjuster,
the frog has pearl inlay dots with the fine silver ring around it on
each side. The length from tip to end of wood (not including
adjuster) is 25 15/16", the hair length is around 21 1/2. The
bow is very balanced and weighs 133 grams. Not too heavy, not
too light! (No mistake on this weight....it was one of our
requirements!) By far, one of the most beautiful sticks
anywhere. The Abalone pearl underslide looks as if there is a
light inside the frog as it looks very bright. A stunningly
beautiful bow. $1,750 (These are slightly higher
than the other Egidius bows because they are our special order, wood
and specs). Again, most of the Egidius Dörfler bows are made
with our specific requirements. Feel free to
email us.
2) French bow, (Also *Egidius*** 4 star) is very similar to #1.
This one though is a bit longer, Sartory model. Also
octagonal, with similar look and fittings. It measures 26 1/2"
from tip of bow to end of stick (not including silver adjuster.)
The hair length is 21 3/4". It weighs 134 gms. $1,750.
3) Egidius Dörfler French style bow with recessed cubic zirconia
diamond. Usually, we prefer to stick with the
traditional looking bass bows: either plain ebony frogs, or with the pearl eye
inlayed (like the bows show above), but this one while very plain,
has an elegantly inlayed zirconian ('faux' diamond) inlay. Drawn
to it's "surface" beauty, we were blown away how this one played on
the bass. We had to have it!!! The full length of the
bow from (without adjuster) is 27 1/16", the playing length is 21
3/4" and weighs 138 gms. $1,450.
4) Egidius Dörfler German bows are a standard Pfretschner
model. The average weight on their German bows is around
133-138grams (with an occasional one under or over.) The
total length, not including the ebony adjuster, is 27 1/2" and the
playing length is 21 5/8". The width of the hair (at frog) or
the ferrule as it is called, is 3/4" wide. These German bows
are a big tradition of making (Pfretschner) and they incredibly well
on the bass. Very well balanced. The spiccato on these
can be long or short, and equally powerful.
Customers can try just the Dörfler bows or a combination of
makers offered here. We ship these out for trial. It's
best to call and tell us about the kinds of playing, the bass (to
match with) etc... so that we can really send you the right kinds of
bows that you will be most happy with.
